On his newest full length offering “Slip Sliding Away,” Eating Napkins CEO Chevy Kalpin, a country goblin steeped in the avant garde and the spirit of improvisation, brings back the forgotten art form of excellent songwriting. Most indie rock in the modern age is obsessed with musical proficiency, aesthetic and, god forbid, “gear”. Kalpin focuses first and foremost on the craft of composition within a rock music context, while not sacrificing the above mentioned aspects. Musically, Kalpin’s creative and unique guitar style shines here, bearing equal parts 90’s screamo, no wave, noise rock and Nirvana. Lyrically he sculpts bleak and visceral imagery, while the delivery thereof is as sensitive as it is terrifying.
